Free trial of a Document Scanning Service by the Central Science Library

From the beginning of July until the end of September, the Central Science Library (CSL), will be conducting a free trial of a new Document Scanning Service for current staff and students of the University. The service will be used for material that is not currently available electronically. This includes articles from journals and chapters from books.

The CSL will scan on request and email out the document, as an A4-sized PDF, within a 24-hour period.

Users of the service should be aware that the CSL operates within the restrictions of the Copyright Act. This means that under UK law the CSL will only be able to provide, for the purposes of private study or research for non-commercial purpose, the following:

a) one article from any one issue of a journal or periodical

b) one chapter or 5% of extracts from a published work.

To make use of this service please send the details via this form <http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/CSL/scanningserviceform.html>.

At the end of the trial the CSL will review the service and look to assessing the long-term sustainability of the Document Scanning Service.

AVAILABLE NOW! 2008 Journal Citation Reports has been released

Journal Citation Reports® offers a systematic, objective means to critically evaluate the world's leading journals, with quantifiable, statistical information based on citation data. By compiling articles' cited references, JCR helps to measure research influence and impact at the journal and category levels, and shows the relationship between citing and cited journals.

The JCR can be accessed via the Web of Knowledge at http://wok.mimas.ac.uk/

Further information on the JCR and the new functionality is available at: http://isiwebofknowledge.com/products_tools/analytical/jcr/

The Cambridge Companion to Darwin: Second Edition

The Cambridge Companion to Darwin: Second Edition is a new title in the Cambridge Companions Online collection.

The naturalist and geologist Charles Darwin (1809-82) ranks as one of the most influential scientific thinkers of all time. In the nineteenth century his ideas about the history and diversity of life - including the evolutionary origin of humankind - contributed to major changes in the sciences, philosophy, social thought and religious belief. The Cambridge Companion to Darwin has established itself as an indispensable resource for anyone teaching or researching Darwin's theories and their historical and philosophical interpretations. Its distinguished team of contributors examines Darwin's main scientific ideas and their development; Darwin's science in the context of its times; the influence of Darwinian thought in recent philosophical, social and religious debate; and the importance of Darwinian thought for the future of naturalist philosophy. For this second edition, coverage has been expanded to include two new chapters: on Darwin, Hume and human nature, and on Darwin's theories in the intellectual long run, from the pre-Socratics to the present.

Cambridge Companions Online, the first product to be launched within the Cambridge Collections Online platform, is a fully searchable, full text collection of over 300 titles from the renowned Cambridge Companions series. Covering literature, classics, philosophy, religion and cultural studies, the collection complements the Cambridge Companions book series - an established favourite with students and scholars - by providing search, browse and bookmark functionality. Over 3,000 essays are already included in the collection, with more set to be added as new volumes are published.

Access to Cambridge Companions Online at http://cco.cambridge.org/ is available on-campus without passwords and off-campus to current students and staff via Raven passwords.

Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America - new JSTOR ejournal

The Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America has been added to the JSTOR archive.

The Bulletin publishes letters, longer commentaries, and philosophical and methodological items related to the science of ecology. In addition, the Bulletin publishes announcements of meetings; reviews of meetings, of software useful for ecological research and teaching, and of other tools for ecologists; articles about the teaching of ecology; obituaries for deceased members and resolutions of respect for former ESA officers, winners of major awards, and certain other ecologists; announcements; and reports of official actions by the Society. Previously published items from other sources can be republished in the Bulletin if the contributor obtains permission of the author and the copyright holder and clearly identifies the original publication. Bulletin content is not peer reviewed and, therefore, the Bulletin does not accept articles that are too technical or specialized to be evaluated for publication without scientific review.

Can't find the journal article or book you need anywhere in Cambridge?

Don't forget that the Balfour Library offers a document supply and inter-library loans service!

Library staff can request journal articles or books for you from the British Library, for a small fee. Requests only take between 3-5 working days to arrive. Find out more by visiting the Inter-Library Loans page of our website at http://www.zoo.cam.ac.uk/library/ills.html

We also have a collection of over 100,000 reprints from the 19th and 20th centuries in the library.

We have many of the theses written by postgraduate students based in this department.

You may not be aware of it, but the Balfour Library encourages recommendations from you all for the purchase of books and other media for our collections.

We welcome recommendations from postgraduates, researchers and teaching staff for purchases which are relevant to teaching and research that takes place in the department, especially text books provided on reading lists, as well as purchasing material to develop particular subject areas. Items recommended for purchase should ideally be of benefit to a range of people in the department.

Books: Would you like more text books, or those with additional teaching materials included? How about guides on how to write about science or do your PhD? Do you have a particular series in mind that would complement our collections?

DVDs or CDs: Would you like to be able to borrow a DVD or CD from the library? We do keep any that accompany text books in the library office for you to borrow but there might be other ones useful to you?

Donations: Are there any books that you own that you don't want anymore and think would be really useful for the library to have? Recent titles are preferred.

Ebooks: The library contributes funds annually to the ebooks@cambridge team and we can recommend titles for purchase by them (for undergraduate teaching purposes, preferably Part I, only). I can ask them if particular books are available in ebook format.

Ejournals: Purchasing of new ejournals titles is achieved through a central fund that all libraries in the university contribute to. We can recommend new titles for purchase on your behalf or you can do so yourself, via the 'Recommend an ejournal title' form online at http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/electronicresources/help/index.php Recommendations are considered for purchase a couple of times per year usually.

Eresources and trials of eresources: Purchasing of new eresources (e.g. not an ejournal or ebook) is generally achieved through University Library funds. We can recommend new eresources for purchase on your behalf or you can do so yourself, via the 'Recommend an eresource' form online at http://www.lib.cam.ac.uk/electronicresources/help/index.php We can also arrange trials to be set up for eresources you consider to be useful.

How to tell us what you want!

We have an annual donation of a few hundred pounds to spend from Cambridge University Press, and an 18% discount from Heffers. Have a look at our 'Books and ebooks' website at http://www.zoo.cam.ac.uk/library/books.html to find links to various booksellers. We also have many booksellers' catalogues in the library office that we can lend you.

I can take recommendations by email at cmc32@cam.ac.uk or we have recommendation cards available in the library office. For books and ebooks, please provide details of the author, title, date of publication, publisher, ISBN, price, who the book will be useful for and why. For ejournals please see the online form I have mentioned above and let me have those details.

I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Open Debate - Why pay for content?

An open debate sponsored by the Academic & Professional Division of The Publishers Association, 24th June at The Royal Institution, 21 Albemarle Street, London W1S 4BS.

The debate begins at 2.00pm and will conclude with a wine reception.

This afternoon event will bring together contrasting views from publisher, librarian and academic communities on the way ahead for value-added content in an Internet age. We want to hear your views: how profound is the current revolution in publishing? Will academic, scholarly and professional markets still pay for content?

Click here http://www.publishers.org.uk/en/home/ for more information and to register.
